Poetry: With Friends Like These by Bruce McRae

With Friends Like These

The one following you
down a rain-stained street.
The one in your house,
awaiting your arrival,
with something to tell you
that you don’t want to hear.
The one in the back yard
looking up at your window,
whistling softly in the hope
they’ll catch your attention.

In with a bad crowd.
In the clutches of yes-men,
whose favours you purchased,
who’ve cost you more than money.
Your oddball entourage,
loyal to the bitter end,
which is, as you’re already aware,
approaching quickly.
