Poetry: Worshipped as a God by Patricia Walsh

Worshipped as a God

by Patricia Walsh

The fear of God is still within you,
sleeping with other jettisoned, a rejected stone,
becoming essential eventually driven home,
surveying for wedding rings now a right turn,
envying their satisfaction, a fate disallowed.

People wanting direction, smoking guns,
gone through motions in a wild calling,
the stripped essay hearkens the growing urge
to lie with the enemy, gone to the well,
the better to rebel, as the literate often do.

Needing to chew the biro, but what of us?
the intangible saviour too invisible for some,
celebrating the time in it, stuffing faces
explaining failures as human, slimming memory,
no oil paintings of your god remains.

The user’s manual enjoys its better spoils,
preferred worship to taste, uninvited,
bloodied salvation gets under your skin,
nothing happens what happened before,
the violent crucifixion not enough for you.

Drunken out of trees, this important gesture,
juvenila biting your ass, remaining off the wall,
captive audience not an audience after all
conniving with friends on a darkened muster,
screening miscreants to your heightened content.
