Poetry: How To Gain Knowledge by Robert Beveridge

How To Gain Knowledge

River of chocolate and children
sprung mature from the crevices
in severed heads
…………………………the taste of oak
and grilled tripe against the back
of the throat, but without meat
or drink
……………and we stand on the street
corner with our back to the church
and ask passersby if they have
a moment to talk about the manifold
and the butterfly valve
…………………………………map
the geography of the contours
of the brain, stir the soup a time
or two, wait for it all to come
together, check to see if it needs
salt or chocolate. Feed the children.
